Our Governance

The British Horse Society is governed by its Constitution, charity law and by other statutory duties. Under the provisions of the Constitution, the Board of Trustees is legally responsible for the affairs of The British Horse Society and has the power to delegate this responsibility.

The primary purpose of national, regional and county committees is to deliver the objectives of The British Horse Society at a local level and to provide a link between members around the country and The British Horse Society Headquarters. 

The primary purpose of advisory committees is to provide advice to the Board, although they also have an important role in ensuring that The British Horse Society's policies are adapted to changing circumstances and are consistently applied. 

There is an operational framework for national, regional and local committees and separate terms of reference for advisory committees.

The Board of Trustees meets a minimum of six times each year and, together with the Society's senior staff, set the direction and strategy of the charity.

We will be holding virtual members’ meetings in 2022 for each of the home nations. This format was piloted in 2021 in response to feedback from the virtual members’ meeting held in July 2020, and the attendance was much higher than at meetings previously held in person at BHS HQ.

Actor, writer and horse owner Martin Clunes took over as President of The British Horse Society on 1 June 2011. He is one of Britain’s most popular and well-regarded actors, and is known to millions from his stage and screen appearances, including Doc Martin, Reggie Perrin, Men Behaving Badly and most recently, Manhunt.
