Carriage driving is a friendly and inclusive sport with lots of opportunities to become involved – both for leisure and competitively.
How the BHS supports carriage driving
The BHS works to defend, extend and promote safe off-road access, as well as safe on-road access for carriage drivers and riders.
Carriage drivers are a vulnerable road user and the BHS works to ensure they have access to safe off-road routes. The BHS work to defend and extend existing access, responding to threats to routes which affect all equestrian users.

The Lindsey Trail, Lincolnshire Wolds
Established in 2012 with support from the BHS, the Lindsey Trail is a series of routes across the Lincolnshire Wolds covering a 69-mile-long trail accessible for carriage drivers, horse riders, cyclists, and walkers.
Paralympic Legacy Access Project Routes
In 2013, the BHS launched the Paralympic Legacy Access Project (PLAP), dedicated to identifying and promoting 20 off-road routes across Britain. The 12-mile circular routes were recognised to suit the needs of carriage drivers with physical limitations.
The project was inspired by an anonymous donation to commemorate the achievements of the Paralympics and Para World Carriage Driving Championship in 2012. Launched by BHS President, Martin Clunes, the 20 routes were all tested prior to launch.
A huge thank you to those who volunteered their time, knowledge and input to create the routes of the Paralympic Legacy Access Project.
