Squirrells Riding School – Ready to shine

Excitement is building as Squirrells Riding School prepares for its debut at the BHS Riding School Championships

The Riding School Championships, a highlight for BHS Approved centres, gives riders who don’t own a horse the rare chance to step into the competitive arena, creating lifelong memories and connections.

Squirrells is a family-run haven for horse lovers in Kent. Since 2008, they’ve encouraged riders of all levels to grow in confidence and skill. The centre, which became BHS Approved in 2010, boasts 24 ponies, an outdoor arena, a cosy café and ample visitor amenities. Their commitment is a testament to the shared joys and ambitions that define the equestrian community.

Owners Hayley and Morgan Squirrell are thrilled to be able to offer this competitive opportunity to their riders. Thirteen eager participants, aged eight to seventeen, have signed up to take part. The school's community spirit is infectious, with parents and young riders alike bonding over this shared adventure.

Participants will tackle challenges across Class One and Two, mastering dressage, conquering a showjumping course, and testing their stable knowledge through an insightful quiz. In preparation, lessons are buzzing with energy as dressage routines are polished and jumps are perfected.

The road to the championships includes a qualifier which they hosted during the Spring half-term. The top four in each class secured a place at the grand event on 16 April at Pickering Grange Equestrian Centre in Leicestershire, so eight of their best riders will be heading north to proudly represent them. BHS is generously supporting with overnight stabling and travel costs, allowing both ponies and riders the time to settle in and prepare for the day.

Morgan reflects, “We had a great day running the qualifier event and everyone who took part were thrilled to take a rosette home at the end of the day. Congratulations to all the riders who qualified. We are immensely proud of all their hard work and dedication. This event means so much to us and to our customers. It isn't just about competing; it's about building friendships and strengthening our community. It’s wonderful to see parents and young riders connecting and supporting one another, making this journey a truly inclusive experience.”
