Stage 2 Care, Lunge and Ride

If candidate group numbers are less than stated, time allocated for the activity may reduce. The BHS may adjust timetables for any reason

Walk the show jump course | If you are taking the riding unit you should walk the course before your briefing begins | It’s up to you how long you want to allocate to walk the course. Just leave enough time to do this before your assessment briefing begins. We recommend at least 30 minutes. |
Assessment welcome and introduction | All candidates assemble for an assessment welcome and introduction.

Care A | Assessed in groups of up to four candidates.
Care A will cover the following topics of the syllabus (not necessarily in this order):

Care B | Assessed in groups of up to two candidates.

Lunge | Lunge a horse for exercise. There may be up to three candidates sharing an arena |
You will lunge for approximately 20 minutes then a short discussion with the assessor. |
Ride A Flat | You will ride two horses in this section. You may be riding in a group of up to six riders. A caller will also be with you in the arena who will call out exercises to be ridden. | 45 minutes. Followed by a short discussion with your assessor. |
Ride B Flat | You will ride two horses in this section. You may be riding in a group of up to six riders. You will ride progressive jumping activities as requested by the assessor to lead up to jumping a course of fences, as described in the syllabus. | 1 hour. Followed by a short discussion with your assessor. |
Assessment finish | Sign out of your assessment. |
Stage 2 Coaching

Lead Rein lesson | Lead rein coaching session. 20 minute coaching session then 5 minute discussion with your assessor. | 25 minutes. |
Lunge lesson | Lunge coaching session. You will warm the horse up and assess on the lunge prior to mounting the rider. 30 minutes session then 5 minute discussion with your assessor. | 35 minutes. |
Group Lesson | Integrated flatwork and jumping coaching session. 45 minutes coaching session plus 5 minute discussion with your assessor. | 50 minutes. |
Stable Management lesson | Stable Management coaching session. 15 minutes coaching session. You will also be asked to be the participant for one session. | 15 minutes. |
Coaching theory and personal development | Roles and responsibilities of a coach. Planning for professional development. | 10 minutes. |
Assessment finish | Sign out of your assessment. |
Stage 2 Riding Out
