Example BHS Stage 3 assessment timings

 Care, Lunge, Ride Dressage and Ride Jump

This is an example. Assessment activities may be timetabled in any order.

If candidate group numbers are less than stated, time allocated for the activity may reduce. The BHS may adjust timetables for any reason

Activity What's involved Time allocated (approx.)
Arrival at the assessment centre The BHS will inform you of your arrival time, via email, within two weeks of your assessment date.
Walk the show jump course and cross country courses If you are taking the Ride Jump assessment you should walk the courses before your briefing begins It’s up to you how long you want to allocate to walk the course. Just leave enough time to do this before your assessment briefing begins. We recommend at least 30 minutes.
Assessment welcome and introduction All candidates assemble for an assessment welcome and introduction.
  • Sign in.
  • Complete emergency contact form.
  • Meet your assessors.
  • Photographic ID checked.
  • Skills Record checked.
  • Hats and body protectors checked against current safety standards.
  • Timetables, candidate numbers and bibs given out.
  • Introduction to the day, format, facilities, layout of assessment centre.
  • Opportunity for you to ask questions.
15 Minutes.
Care A Assessed in groups of up to two candidates. Care A will cover the following topics of the syllabus (not necessarily in this order):
• Tack (including bits and studs)

• Conformation
2 hours. You may be asked questions whilst carrying out practical tasks.
Care B Assessed in groups of up to two candidates. Care B will cover the following topics of the syllabus (not necessarily in this order):
• Roles and responsibilities of a groom

• Nutrition

• Fitness

• Behaviour and handling horses

• Health

• Anatomy and physiology

• Managing a turnout area
1 hour. You may be asked questions whilst carrying out practical tasks.
Lunge Lunge a horse to maintain training. You will lunge for approximately 20 minutes then an approximate 10 minute discussion with the assessor.
Ride Dressage You will ride two horses in this section. You may be riding in a group of up to six riders, working in open order. You will meet the horses in the arena where you will be paired with your first horse to ride. The ride will stop, all dismount and you will be paired with your second horse to ride for the remaining time. 45 minutes. Followed by a short discussion with your assessor.
Ride Jump You will ride two horses in this section. You may be riding in a group of up to six riders. You will ride one horse over show jumps, and the second horse over cross country fences as described in the syllabus. 1 hour. Followed by a short discussion with your assessor
Assessment finish Sign out of your assessment.

Stage 3 Coaching

Dressage lesson Dressage coaching session. 30 minutes coaching session then 20 minutes discussion with your assessor. 40 minutes.
Simulated cross country lesson Simulated cross country coaching session. 40 minutes session then 10 minute discussion with your assessor. 50 minutes.
Coaching theory and personal development Roles and responsibilities of a coach. Planning for professional development. Assessed within the discussions after each coaching session.
Assessment finish Sign out of your assessment.

Stage 3 Riding Out

Riding Out A Assessed in groups of up to six candidates. Riding Out A will cover the following topics of the syllabus (not necessarily in this order):
• Training session (ride and lead)

• Preparing riders for trekking

• Self-evaluation
1 hour 45 minutes. You may be asked questions whilst carrying out practical tasks.
Riding Out B Assessed in groups of up to six candidates. Riding Out B will cover the following topics of the syllabus (not necessarily in this order):
• Roles and responsibilities

• Ride planning (risk assessment, preparing route, ride management)

• Horse assessment (suitability for trekking)
1 hour 30 minutes. You may be asked questions whilst carrying out practical tasks.
