Free BHS membership for candidates registering for a Stage 1 Assessment
The BHS is continually looking at ways to support and grow the equestrian sector and serve individual equestrians from grass roots activities through to professional level accomplishments. We have listened to feedback from candidates, approved centres, colleges, employers, and other industry professionals who are looking for ways to encourage more people to consider equine related careers and begin their journey into our professional qualifications.
We are delighted to demonstrate our commitment to supporting the industry by removing the requirement for Stage 1 Care and Stage 1 Ride candidates to purchase BHS Gold membership.
Instead, candidates will be eligible for a free of charge ‘BHS Silver Candidate membership’ at the point of booking their first Stage 1 assessment, subject to registering this with the BHS. If the candidate books their assessment via a riding school or college, they can apply for this on behalf of the candidate.
The free of charge BHS Silver Candidate membership will be valid for 12 months from the date you register and, as part of this package, you will receive regular e-news to keep up to date with key equestrian issues and events in your area, a free digital subscription to British Horse magazine and free and discounted tickets to leading equestrian events throughout the year.
How to apply:
- Book your BHS Stage 1 assessment and we will automatically begin the BHS Silver Candidate Membership, or
- If you are taking an ‘in-house’ Stage 1 Assessment at a BHS Approved Centre, book your assessment with the centre and they will apply on your behalf.

- You must be a minimum of 13 years of age and applying for a BHS Stage One assessment to be eligible for BHS Silver Candidate membership.
- On registration for a BHS Stage One assessment, the Silver Candidate membership will be set up if the Candidate does not currently have a current active BHS membership.
- The free Silver Candidate membership is a one-time only product. It will automatically terminate at the end of the 12-month period or until you upgrade your membership to a paid-for product. The BHS Silver Candidate membership cannot be renewed or re-applied for once expired.
- The Silver Candidate membership is personal, non-transferable and has no monetary value and cannot be sold on or redeemed.

- Any information provided to us will be put onto our database and processed by in accordance with our Privacy Policy. It is your responsibility to keep your email and contact details up to date.
- Silver Candidate membership applies in the UK and Republic of Ireland only. We still require International Students to be International Full or International-E Members.
- We retain the right to amend, alter, suspended or withdraw membership benefits, services, products or offers at anytime without notice.
- Silver Candidate membership cannot be used as a membership requirement for any other BHS assessment or qualification.
