What’s covered in the unit?
The award assesses your knowledge and practical skills when carrying out routine tasks, such as mucking out, bedding down, and providing food and water. You will be asked to handle horses inside the stable and outdoors, apply and remove rugs, groom, lead a horse in hand and hold a horse for inspection.
After completing the unit, you will:
- Be able to put on and adjust saddles, bridles, and boots – as well as be able to clean tack
- Know how to lead a horse safely in a variety of environments and identify regular field checks
- Have an awareness for the after-work care of a horse and the different rugs they may need
- Have some understanding of horse behaviour and health and be able to recognise any abnormalities
- Be able to carry out routine stable management and horse care tasks including mucking out and grooming

- A minimum age of 13 years
- BHS Gold membership or Student Silver membership
- International students should be either Overseas Full or Overseas E-Members.

You will be assessed on the following learning outcomes:
- Know about the responsibilities of working on the stable yard
- Be able to maintain a clean stable
- Be able to carry out routine grooming tasks
- Be able to describe horses and know about horse behaviour and health
- Be able to use rugs appropriately
- Be able to tack up and un-tack
- Be able to handle a horse
- Be able to feed and water a horse

Pre-assessment criteria for this assessment include:
- Ready for assessment form completed – recommended
The above must be completed by a BHS Accredited Professional Coach or Coaches in a BHS Approved Centre.

Training

All applicants are encouraged to undertake practical training at a BHS Approved Centre or with a BHS Accredited Professional Coach to make sure you are ready for your assessment.

Please remember to book in plenty of time. Bookings will close two weeks before the assessment date.
We will always do our best to accommodate your preference for an assessment. However, the venue and date are not confirmed until payment is taken and you have received your written confirmation.
Re-sitting your assessment

If you have been unsuccessful on your first assessment, we encourage you to call us to book a re-sit.
Of course, we will also answer any questions you may have and provide you with feedback at this stage. You may have been successful against some, but not all of the assessment criteria, in which case we can just assess you on the sections on which you were not so strong.
